Eddy's recommended albums of 2021:

No, not a top number list this year, but some lesser known cd’s, I presume, in an alphabetical order. If you haven’t listened to them, please do. They’re worth every minute …

    AZMARI – Sama’i

It’s not every year the list starts with a Belgian band! And with a cd on which you don’t hear one single guitar string!! These lads from Brussels enjoy playing patchwork music. One moment you’re in the East, the next somewhere in Africa or South-America. Jazzy? Ambient? Dub? Psych? All of them … and more, I guess. If you like a trip around some continents in cd time …

BEND THE FUTURE – Without notice

I read a review about this cd and thought: this might be my cup of tea. Turned out to be the whole pot! Tasteful jazzrock with symfo herbs, played by the French quintet as a band enjoying every second. One moment you’re banging your head, the next you’re dreaming the sounds. Mostly instrumental the music does the talking …

    BERNARD L’HOIR – Noachis Terra

This is also Belgian, but there couldn’t be a greater difference with Azmari. To me this Belgian composer came as a huge surprise, though it is his 9th album already! More classical than prog, more 19th century instruments than rockband ones. Close your eyes and wonder away while listening to this fusion of thoughts and emotions and you’ll enjoy fabulous images …

JASON BIELER AND THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA - Songs from the apocalypse

Yes, voted longest band name this year. Let’s start with the man himself. Rings a bell? Saigon Kick, it is, indeed. Saigon Kick was Bieler’s band quite a few years ago now. Maybe not so well known to new rock fans, but certainly to rock musicians. When Bieler decided to make the album and invited some friends, it seems they had all been waiting for the invitation! Members of Queensrÿche, Megadeth, Sons of Apollo, Extreme, Southgang and – of course – Saigon Kick. Though this last band was more a metal band, this Bieler album is far more catchy rock. Yet every number has surprises, also in the text and notes. Listening so many times to this cd made me smile as many times …

BIG BIG TRAIN – Common Ground

There’s one more cd by the band to come in February or March and then … Progfans are still mourning: 20 November 2021 lead vocalist, multi instrumentalist and face of the band David Longdon died. Big Big Train is undoubtedly one of the leading progrock bands of the first decades of the 2000’s. May he live on forever in his band’s music …

    THE CYBERIAM – Connected

They’re back, having been in my list in 2000. No nonsense yet very rich, complex and powerful progmetal. Just the way I like this music to sound. Have the neighbours gone? Turn up the volume …

    ESTHESIS – The Awakening

I know it says 2020 on the cover. But it was the very end and most of us might have bought it last year, right? This is sphery progrock at its best. No, not cosmic, but laid back enjoyable prog. Lyric guitarsolos and keyboardmelodies on top of bass and drum layers. These French musicians take my breath away. I know what to listen to on Sunday afternoon enjoying my Belgian beer …

FEELING OF PRESENCE – Of Lost Illusion

The album was brought to my attention by coincidence, but am I glad it happened. Frequency Drift is a German band which flirted with my tops in the preceding years. Andreas Hack, member of that band, started this side project Feeling of Presence to take us on escapes in the progrock world. Only six numbers lead us into the evening with guitars and keys drawing the perfect twilight only to be coloured by the occasional, inventive beat or orchestration. A short walk but so perfect

LEGACY PILOTS – The Penrose Triangle

Third album by German Frank Us and his crew. Last year in my list, and this year also, as this cd is again top progrock. He’s got the same members on board: pilots like Steve Morse, John Mitchell, Marco Minneman, Pete Trawavas certainly know how to start the engines. The crew members reveal what quality to expect …

    MEER – Playing House

Probably the biggest and nicest surprise for me this year. 8 young Norwegian musicians letting us taste their talents. Sometimes more pop than prog or rock, then folky but always top, melodic and catchy. Where do we go from here? asks the band in the last but one song. A song which enters as an earwig and leaves you musing all day. Answer to the question? Take your time to come up with a new album as unexpectedly brilliant as this one, please …

    OCTAVISION – Coexist

An album I had been waiting for for quite some time after having heard the first Octavision songs two or three years ago. Officially a 2020 cd, but only last year ‘in the news’. The cd is Hovak Alaverdyan, guitarist and more, at his best. In the progmetal world of this rather unknown musician with Armenian roots we also find rock celebrities like Billy Sheehan or Jeff Scott Soto. Mostly instrumental the album serves a variety of symfo metal, fusion and jazz. Never too long a solo, never too boring long a number. Just as I like it. Are the neighbours back home yet?

RAVEN SAD – The leaf and the wing

To finish this year’s list let’s take a trip down the neo-prog scene of an Italian concert hall. No this is no live album, but imagine a stage in an amphitheatre somewhere in the Mediterranean. There’s a play about to start, only it’s a concert by a band called Raven Sad. All props of the so typical Italian theatre have been put in place, so bring on the show …

ACUTE MIND - Under the empty sky -

    ALACANTRA - Solitaire -
Many a band starts as a Pink Floyd kick off, don’t they? Or puts some Roger Waters songs in there live repertoire. Not this band, but the influence is without any doubt. They head from Italy and have that typical melodic Italianism in their music as well. A Sunday afternoon treat …

    ANACHRONOS - Aqui y afuera -
It was by pure coincidence I learned about Mylodon Records and about Anachronos. This Chilean band from Conception chooses to present progmetal in their own enthousiastic, unconventional way. Though some well known bands of the genre are peeking behind the corner. Volume up, here and outside!

    DEEP PURPLE - Whoosh! -
Ah, what a rythm duo Paice and Glover are! Bring in the virtuosity of gents Morse and Airey, what could a band want more? A singer who feels relaxed and at home in a recording studio perhaps? You’ve got it all on this one.

  • Eddy's top albums 2020 in alphabetical order

    FISH - Weltschmerz -
The Scottish bard’s farewell cd, so he says. We all know in Fish’s music words are equally - if not more - important than notes. He’s not only a singer, is he? Let’s hope we can see him on stage in 2021, also for a farewell experience, I’m afraid.

  • Eddy's top albums 2020 in alphabetical order

    MOON HALO - Chroma -
Who? Maybe not really a band, but more of a project. Ian Jennings had some wonderfully beautiful melodies in his head. Found himself a recording studio in Cumbria and one of the best singers of the progrockscene: Marc Atkinson. Yep, an Anglian pearl this one.

    LEGACY PILOTS - Aviation -
A musician can dream of his own progressive project. But can he realize his dream? Multi-instrumentalist Frank Us, did. With the help of an impressive Squad – pilots like Steve Morse, John Mitchell, Marco Minneman, Pete Trawavas are aboard the plane. Start the engines …

    THEO Figureheads -
Yep, they still exist: cd’s with only long tracks. Only 4 of them on this jewel, clocking between 10 – 17 minutes. 4 trips down proggy lane. Close them curtains, and the eyes as well. Here we Theo …

THE CYBERIAM Forging Nations Live -
There were quiet a few good live albums this year (Big Big Train, Dream Theater, Flying Colours to name but a few). But what these guys perform on stage during ProgStock, recorded as they are playing, is unbelievable. Please come to Europe in 2021, please, please, please …

    THE SEGUE Holograms -
Without any doubt the most jazzy, fusiony rock cd in this list. And yes there’s always something new to discover each time you listen … as long as you put the volume on 10. So you better wait till the neighbours have gone shopping …

    THOUGHTS FACTORY - Elements -
Among the many progmetal bands it’s not always easy to find a real gem. Well this one is. Why? Because of the unbelievable insturmental skills of the musicians? Without any doubt, but also because the most tricky part of so many progmetal bands is an absolute success in Thoughts Factory: Cornelius Wurth. He knows how to sing!

GARY HUSBAND & MARKUS REUTER - Music of our Times -
2020 was a bizarre year. A year of saying goodbye, of sadness, of uncomfortness, of loneliness, of … That’s probably the reason this cd ends up in the list. Not the most joyful listening experience, but an execptional one. No wonder if you bring two contemporary composer gems in a live recorded studio set. More avant-garde than prog, more improvised than smooth, but always so mind and soul taking …

  • Bubbling Under:

ELECTRIC MUD - Quiet days on earth -
Not that quiet, though. But ssst and listen, that’s true. 15 instrumental beauties lead you into a 79 minutes trip in your wonderland. Ready for some unconvetional progressive music?
